Literally nobody except one person is saying it's no big deal to use them (present tense). Everyone else is accepting that people can be sheltered and ignorant as teenagers (past tense) and can learn better and grow up with experience.

To deny that is to claim that people can never change. Are you the anon that was insisting that yesterday?

No, I've never insisted that people can never change, I'm just surprised by the OP being so sure that EVERYONE said bigoted things as teenagers to the point that they think someone must be lying if they said they didn't.

But where did you get "I'm sure everyone said bigoted things and they must be lying if they said they didn't" from "what % of us would pass a multiple decade purity test?"

The former is a statement, the latter is a question. OP never said anything about being sure people were lying.

I'm sorry, it wasn't the OP, but other comments in the thread that were saying those kinds of things.

They've probably been burned by people who claim to be bigotry-free but hold subconscious biases. Racism and homophobia are pretty easy and obvious ones to avoid but ableism and awareness of mental disorders is relatively new, how people speak about and address gender is also rapidly changing, and that's not to even mention the ever present specter of classism that is hardly ever addressed by anyone not already on the left.

I think it's possible for someone to be totally bigotry-free. I also think it's very real to say that tons of people claim to be non-bigots and claim to have never said a single offensive word to anyone but are bigoted about something or other and offended people without realizing it. And also that times change and what is acceptable now may be considered bigoted in 20 years when we look back at it.

*relatively new in the mainstream awareness, I should say
