Semi-political question, but maybe it goes here?

(Anonymous) 2025-02-01 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
What movies/shows/games that aren't outright political essays do you think had the best portrayal or arguments for or against a particular ideology or political stance?

People complain all the time about movies/shows/game that did things poorly, but which canons did politics really well?

Well the problem is that to really do politics well, you kinda have to pick a side and go for it. You can't really do both sides without it coming off muddled and pleasing nobody.

By that do you mean you can't think of any canon that did it well? I'm not sure what this answer means.

All Star Trek up until Enterprise did it well. Enterprise and later took a massive dive into muddledom.

I was thinking about this the other day that the og FF7 did the saving-the-planet thing well back in the day. I played it at the time and still do. It was made around the same time the hole in the ozone layer was discovered and presented a fascist corporation and those that fought against the regime really good.

Fast and Furious 7 did all that?

Ngl if the whole game had stayed in Midgar and followed Avalanche's eco terrorism adventures I'd have liked the game better.

I like the game, it'd just have liked it better.

What? No. That game was late 90s and the ozone hole dates from the 70s. Public awareness and action dates from the mid 80s - I remember learning about it in primary school.

yeah but the 90s was when the fear mongering set in about using roll on deodorants instead of sprays and other aerosols to help close it and the reduce-reuse-recycle slogan came into play. the save-the-whales campaign was huge. FF7 fits for the time.

No it wasn't, I'd finished school by then and my entire high school years were about that. And I'm Australian, so we were near the ozone hole. The CFC ban came into force in 1989.

And then there was Advent Children with its "oh hey, we found more OIL this is great" solution and... huh.

Yes Minister on how they all do everything and anything for their own gains but in an utopian fashion. As in no crimes and bribes.
The Distinguished Gentleman on elections and lobby.
Marvel CA Civil War on how USA likes to move armed forces to other countries without any accountability or respect for the boarders.

One Piece is very good at that.

The most obvious is the Fishman Island arc. There is the contrast of how Otohime and Fisher Tiger's fight against the oppression of fishmen, but Hody Jones is also a good look at how children of an oppressed people can become radicalised.

+1

I wrote a little essay to that effect a few years ago. Fandom hates that arc because weh weh too slow weh weh transitional arc but it is the best for serious commentary on racism and terrorism. And, no spoilers, but it's hugely important for where the story is and where it's going. Politically speaking though, yeah, it's really amazing what Oda did with those extremely sensitive topics. Hody's "Nothing" line still gives me chills.

Water 7/Impel Down was my favourite arc because of this. I haven't kept up with it since the timeskip but Franky's "it's never a crime just to exist" line is extremely relevant atm.

Babylon 5 did a great job with this.

FFX presents a good argument as to why people in power need to know when to retire. Without spoiling it... there's definitely a cut-off point that some folks ignored.

Xenoblade 3, weirdly, presents a good argument as to why oligarchs should not be in charge. An entire "class" of people whose goal is to live forever and also rule the world forever... even when it's clear that what they're doing is unsustainable, due to a world that's dying (thanks in part to them). They have created a world where the people are divided and constantly at war. They sacrifice the young and steal their future, but no matter how much this "class" takes for themselves, they are never satisfied. I'm probably simplifying it a bit but also am trying to avoid specific spoilage.
