Nintendo switch
(Anonymous) 2025-02-02 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)A friend just randomly gave me theirs because they said its just collecting dust at their house. I haven't had a Nintendo since the 64 so I am out of the loop. The only game she had was Zelda Tears of the Kingdom (which I am ridiculously excited to play) so any must haves please share!
I'm about to do a google deep dive to see what my options are but I always love hearing people's personal recs.

What sort of games do you typically enjoy? Here's what I'd recommend to get you started:
Fire Emblem: 3 Houses - Strategy JRPG about becoming a teacher at a royal academy run by Anime Catholics, and discovering everything is not as it seems. Super involved but not overly difficult, all the characters are lovely, highly recommend.
Balatro - Addictive poker game where you play hands to win increasingly larger pots, while powered up by special jokers. The sort of game where you sit down to play one round and then it's 3 hours later.
Minami Lane - Short, sweet street building simulator where you build a lovely little community and balance different generational needs.
If you're a JRPG enjoyer, I'd also recommend Fuga: Melodies of Steel (a strategy JRPG about dog and cat children fighting Nazis with an eldritch tank), The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero (a JRPG about an offshoot branch of a city police department investigating weird crimes and discovering political corruption everywhere they look), or Grandia 2 (a JRPG about a mercenary who gets contracted to escort a nun to a cathedral only for her to get possessed by a high ranking demon - and everything goes sideways after that).

(Anonymous) 2025-02-02 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)I've played all sorts. I think the only genre I really don't care for is firstperson shooters and straight up fighting games. Minami Lane sounds adorable. And I am pretty sure I've played earlier Fire Emblem games so I will have to check out the latest. Thank you for all the detailed recs!

(Anonymous) 2025-02-03 12:38 am (UTC)(link)Super Mario Odyssey is good if you like 3D and aren't prone to motion sickness.
Puzzle stuff can vary... I recently bought A Little to the Left (because I accidentally completed it while demo'ing and felt I should give money lol). Price is reasonable and you get a daily puzzle after you complete the game. There's also DLC (though I recommend probably getting it at a discount).
Tetris 99 is available, I think, if you have a Nintendo Switch Online subscription. You can compete with other folks online and earn game skins and icons.

(Anonymous) 2025-02-02 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)Luigi’s Mansion games are great.
And Animal Crossing and Mario Kart are must haves. Rocketleague is also pretty popular still afaik.
I’d personally avoid Witcher 3 or Skyrim unless you want them and have no other way to play them. They don’t translate to the Switch very well unless you keep it docked.

(Anonymous) 2025-02-02 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)Oh now I'm torn. I usually like to do things chronologically but you make a strong argument for switching them. I'll have to look into it and see where I land.

(Anonymous) 2025-02-02 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing are great cosy time-sink games.
Balatro is a fantastic poker-based roguelite card game, but only uses the hands as a base and they're all explained, so no worries if you've never played poker itself! Be warned, it's very, very addictive once it clicks.
The Bayonetta games are perfect if you're into fast-paced hack and slash gameplay (if you're a fan of Devil May Cry you'll love these)
Mario Party games are fun if you have some friends round and fancy ruining your friendships with them. My brother was ready to flip the table at Christmas.
For a good old-fashioned JRPG, Tales of Symphonia is a lot of fun and has loads of content, just keep in mind it's a Gamecube game originally so it might seem a bit dated.

(Anonymous) 2025-02-02 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)lol! I'm tempted to add them to the holiday game rotation at family gatherings with that kind of warning. We usually stick to board games (the most infamous story is a table being flipped in the middle of a long game of Risk) but this could be fun to mix things up.
I keep seeing Balatro mentioned and normally I'd skip by because Poker isn't my thing but now I'm curious so I'll have to go check it out.
I have a secondhand game store nearby so I'm going to make a list and check them out later this week to see what I can score. So excited to have something to look forward to!
