Not OP, but I'm assuming it's that the dialogue made very little effort to be time-period appropriate and modern expressions really pull one out of the scenes. [The accents are all over the place as well, but that's a different rant].

I hate it when period dramas do this. Not only is it very jarring to hear anachronistic slang and speech come out of someone's mouth when they're wearing historical(ish) clothing, it makes me feel like the script writer and director didn't trust their audience to be smart enough to grasp the plot without 21st century language.

This is particularly egregious when it's a Jane Austen adaptation, because you cannot separate Austen's voice from the work.

That "Emma" adaptation when she reads a letter in which Mr Elton goes to away to "relax". Oww.

Which adaptation of Emma was that?

I honestly can't remember. One of the more recent ones, I think. Not a dark-haired Emma, anyway, and not the 1972 one.

I have a secret love for anachronistic speaking/slang in period pieces, but only if it is done purposely and done well. Often it is more just poor writing than an actual stylistic choice.
