They didn't distress (or kill) a real horse, that was an urban legend. They carefully (over months) trained two professional stunt horses to be able to stand still in water up to their chin, then cut away.

AYRT Yeah, I thought that too for years, then one day I looked it up and it turned out it wasn't at all true! It was a big relief for me so I'm glad to pass that on.

Thank you for this! The version of the story that made it to me was that a horse was not fully trained in the circumstances and distressed at being submerged. It’s really lovely to look up sources and find that the horses were actually quite chilled out.
