I think that scene gets everyone a little teary-eyed... it's Atreyu's distress and anguish at not being able to save Artax, and the knowledge that it's Artax's own sadness that's killing him by causing him to not want to fight his way out. I was too young to understand it then, but it's an eerily apt metaphor for depression. I think even kids sense the truth in that scene, and certainly when you grow up, it hits you all the harder.
