Have you ever looked up old toys

(Anonymous) 2025-02-06 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
and been shocked at how awesome your childhood brain remembered it being only to realize it was in reality not all that?

Inspired by the MLP secret I was just thinking about this carrying case we had for our MLPs and how cool I thought it was. My memory made it so much more than it was. I mean it's still pretty neat, but it's also just a plastic and velcro case. Also I did not remember all the pink. For some reason in my memory this thing was a totally different vibe with terracotta orange roof and a classy stable look. Kids see the world differently.

we had the 'US - First Version' (hand-me-down from older cousins)

I have not BUT I discovered that my childhood stuffed animal was in the music video for Barbie Girl. D:

I've looked at the old vintage He-Man toys and they are just ridiculous. The only "cool" ones are Panthor with the flock coating and Battlecat. Stridor is nice too, I guess.

I've searched without any luck for toy horses from a She-ra like line where it was a white horse with gold hooves and snap on gold wings on its legs and the villain counterpart was black with red details. I've seen it in a toy catalogue from the 80's when I was a kid, but I can't remember what the brand was. Those could perhaps be disappointing if I were to find them, maybe.

Oh god I remember that line but I also can't remember the name or company. Obligatory horse girl vibes in the 80s, nuff said. I wanted them but I never did get them, made do with good ol' Swift Wind.

Ayrt

I'm just happy someone else remembers them, because I almost started to believe that I had dreamed it up by now

I never asked my parents to get them for me but man, did I want them. So pretty!

When I was cleaning out my parents' attic I found my old Castle Grayskull playset. Only someone appears to have replaced this awesome fortress-thing that I remember with this cheap and tiny plastic knockoff. That can't be right surely?

Oh man, the MLP toys, especially from the 80s. Definitely so much pink. I had some kind of palace set with a fountain. Lots of ponies, boys and girls, and even a sea pony. Can't remember if the palace had its own carrying case or not though.

As for me...

I remember laughing when I played Pac-Man on Atari 2600 for the first time in YEARS... wondering how, as a kid, I didn't catch how fugly it was compared to the arcade version.

I had a palace/mansion that had a swimming pool and it all folded up into itself to be able to carry it. I remember bringing it to a sleepover once haha.

MLP had some great toys. We also had this one pony that you could pull the tail and it would "grow" and then you cranked his head back and forth to make it short. The sound was awful and we used to joke you had to break his neck to give him a haircut.

I was obsessed with my Furby back in 2000. To be fair, it was pretty impressive on a technological level, but my god the number of times it refused to go to sleep or woke us up in the middle of the night. Just full on lurching to life at 3AM screeching "COCK-A-DOODLE-DOOOO HAHAHA." But I adored it, I made a stupid little bed for it out of polystyrene and a blanket I sewed. I remember going to a relative's for a New Years party and being absolutely distraught that I forgot to bring it, because I really wanted to impress everyone with it, lol. Kid brain.

There was a game I think called My Little Princess where you spin a wheel to collect jewelry and the first person to get each piece wins and becomes the Little Princess.

Kindergarten me was obsessed with the game and I loved the necklace and tiara.

Somewhere in my late 20s or early 30s, I saw the game with the game pieces at a random place (can't recall if it was at a daycare or doctor's office or acquaintance's house), and realized how much my 4yo mind did in creating something amazing out of dollar store quality plastic toys. XD
