In the original manga, Garp only showed up in a cover story wherein he took Koby and Helmeppo under his wing, which is, yes, technically canon by Oda's standards but also was not actually part of the storyline of the manga nor the anime (which showed parts of the cover story but not all of it). Garp's presence in the entire East Blue arc plus the beginning of the Grand Line is background only. Tangential. Him being revealed as Luffy's grandpa didn't happen until Water Seven a full 500 chapters into the manga.

Yes, exactly, that's my point. In the original, if you missed the cover stories and just plain forgot since they happened years ago, Garp was just some random dude who suddenly appeared in the story. Sure, it was pretty insane that a Marine Vice Admiral is Luffy's granddad, but there wasn't anything specific about it being Garp that was insane. Any of the Vice Admiral's involved in the Buster Call could have turned out to be Luffy's family and it would have hit harder since they were actually part of the story at this point.

Which is why I like the LA reveal better. Garp has been part of the show from the get-go, the audience has an emotional connection because it seems as though he's the bad guy after our loveable main. And then the understanding of the character just gets turned on its head with the reveal.

Having watched the LA with multiple people who hadn't seen/read One Piece before, the reveal was set up and executed really really well.
