1. have an idea I think is cool
2. it'd be neat to create a thing with this so it's not just an idea
3. produce thing
4. be happy at finished product

1. see something that sounded interesting but was done really badly
2. UGH THIS IS TERRIBLE WHAT A WASTE, I CAN DO THAT THING BETTER

I do this sometimes with really badly executed fic with a good premise. I will just sit and edit/rewrite the entire thing to my satisfaction, then go back and read it and enjoy. I never post it anywhere because it's not actually new fic but it pleases me as both a writing exercise and then I get the fic I want to read.

I think that also drives a lot of fanfiction in general, not necessarily comparing your fic to another fic. Fix-it fic is a whole trope after all

Definitely and sometimes I think about taking it that step further to be an actual fix-it fic, but I'm lazy. Or maybe not that creative. I am more just doing a major beta/edit overhaul and maybe adding a few scenes or lines here and there.
