I think you put into words why Akiho is just not gelling with me in CCS. Her entire personality is that She Is Nice. And, well, Sakura is nice, but Sakura is the main character. And a lot of what makes her compelling is that she is friendly to people who, initially, aren't. How Sakura deals with that and ultimately, still extend her hand in support justifies her being kind.

It's boring when Sakura bonds with another important character who doesn't have that conflict. Akiho is just nice, and any backstory she does have (from what I've read up to so far, I haven't caught up from vol...10ish as of now), while interesting, doesn't really connect with her personality. I mean, she's lonely, I guess? She has a crush on her butler, I guess? But she's just Nice To a Fault.

So yeah, I kinda agree: Akiho is pretty damn bland.

Honestly, same. They couldn't even make her interested in girls to give poor Tomoyo a goddamn bone.

I like Kobato and Akiho, but in that "Well, they're inoffensive?" kind of way. I don't care about them the way I care about Hokuto or Yuuko or Himawari or literally almost any other female CLAMP character written in the last thirty years.

Yeah, I wanted to like Clear Card, but Akiho’s so damn boring. Don’t remember much about Kobato except I think she died, got reincarnated, and somehow ended up with that one guy even though he was way older than her.

I still think it's hard to get more boring than Sakura herself. Except for the main character from Angelic Layer. I think CLAMP has always had pretty boring central characters. Their appeal is pretty art and interesting ideas that are sometimes executed well story-wise, but not character-wise.

I was just watching various SNL clips and noticed this in the newer ones. It's always been somewhat of a thing with some guest stars, but it seems like even the regular cast are just reading cards/teleprompters now. Like not even trying to hide it, just straight up "my turn to read in class" vibes. It lowers the quality by quite a bit.

I didn't thread together that this is probably why I never liked SNL as much as MadTV until fredster2000 (on YT) pointed out that MadTV had the benefit of having some of their skits and bits be prerecorded so the editing strengthened a lot of the jokes.
