Yeah, I think you summed it up well. "Nice" as a primary character trait isn't inherently bland, it's only bland when it's the ONLY primary character trait. Like, one of my favorite characters of all time is nice and good and kind, but that also winds up being a huge flaw because he keeps all of his feelings bottled up due to not wanting to burden other people with them and this leads to a lot of people getting hurt as a result. "Nice" CAN be interesting! You just have to actually do something with it.
