What is the population of your town/city?

(Anonymous) 2025-02-19 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
The other thread got me curious.

I grew up in a small town of about 2,000 people with not much around us. The largest city was around an hour away and had a pop of 20,000.

I currently live in a city of est pop around 230,000, but the general metro area is 1.3 million

I moved a lot growing up. Some places were tiny (around 2k pop) and some were really big (40k pop). My current city has 20k but I’m moving later this year to place with a population of about 3100 people. I have always preferred to be surrounded by a lot more land than people.

Saaame. Though I foolishly landed on a career path that is kind of dependant on larger populations being nearby. I wish I had a work from home job and could just buy a house in the middle of nowhere with lots of land.

A lot of my relatives are the same, keep moving as population expands and more people move where they are. I'm the opposite. I love visiting the country, but I've always been a city girl. I grew up in cities, and I've always just been happier living in a city.

Depends on what you are talking about. The area I'm in is called Mesquite, but it is part of the larger Dallas area. Mesquite has about 147 thousand. Dallas has 1.3 million.

900. I grew up in a town of 10,000 and left for the city (3 million at the time) at 18. I swore I'd never move back to the country, but this area is much nicer than where I grew up!

27,000, but I'm in a suburb of a bigger city that's 405k and a metro that's 3.2 mil

I've always wondered what is considered a suburb vs what is considered just part of a larger city. What is the difference that makes something one vs. the other? Sometimes it is clear, like when we lived in Ipswich, Massachusetts, it was a good hour drive from the city and it was clear it wasn't actually part of Boston. But here in Texas, cities are more spread out, so there isn't quite as clear a line.

Well, in my case, this was a small golfing city that was just outside of city lines, with a bit of unincorporated county between the two, but now the larger city actually incorporated everything around us and sort of made us an island, more or less

Closest city has 252,639 (as of 2023). My little rural community has 963 (as of 2021).

I grew up in a town of ~3,500, but I currently like in a city of ~430,000.

Around 8000, which I've discovered is a sort of sweet spot for me.

Grew up in a town of ~37,000. Briefly lived in a city of ~120,000. I moved to a town with a population hovering around 8000 a little over a decade ago. Last year, we moved again, to a town with a similar pop.

I like the vibe of the smaller scale compared to the larger. But I wouldn't want to go any smaller, because it feels like it would be harder to deal with everyone knowing everybody. At this level, there's enough social pressure to keep people from getting too dickish without anyone being able to form the kind of hardened cliques that would allow them to get away with being dickish.

849,000. Feels about the perfect size to me. City but not too big of a city.

I grew up in a town that has a population of under 1000. The largest town was pretty close and is currently hovering just under 10,000 people. The largest city was an hour and a half away so we never went, lol.

I now live in a city with a population of around 755,000, with the metro being 4 million.

Around 212,000 or so. It used to be way smaller, but people have been moving here because they're getting priced out of the larger cities.

Our metro area is more than 20 million :'D

Grew up in a town of around 300 (not a typo)

Now live in a city of about 3 million, metro area about 9 million.

These two facts are directly related by cause and effect, lol.

1.3 million, with another ~2 million in the surrounding county.

~43,600 per a survey taken 2 years ago.

I'm guessing it's a bit more these days since the car traffic is getting gradually worse. We're big enough to have chain stores and a train station, but small enough not to be noisy all the time.

~1/2 a million. But it's suburban sprawl so it feels like a smaller city that just goes ON AND ON

I grew up in a town of ~500 people. I now live in a town of about 3000 in the winter, 15000 during tourist season. I am glad my little town has so many people that visit but it is overwhelming at times. The grocery store is emptied of certain foods most of the summer, the roads are crowded, and the tourists treat us locals like objects. Thank goodness for a booming farmer’s market.
