I don't think it's that, more that everyone recognizes billionaires are evil, and you can't make a plot out of "anyway, the BBEG didn't do anything in the story."

do you mean personal torture or like entertainment torture, because the latter has some historical grounding (along with poor people using that impulse to see the poor as fodder to become rich)? and i don't think the billionaires have changed.

I mean, it's easier in storytelling to put a face to evil, I guess. But it's not like there isn't historical precedent at all. Nothing more entertaining than a fight for survival.

Most Western media seems to run more along the lines of billionaires see the rest of us the way the developers saw the rabbits in Watership Down. The torture and death might happen anyway, but it's not the point and there's not a lot of thought going into it. It's just a side effect of doing business.

The rich absolutely care if the poor live or die. What they don't care about is the quality of how the poor does either. And if it's far away from their gated communities and private islands, all the better. All the rich need or want from the poor is for them to breed and fight over crumbs.

Huh. Now that I think about it, media depicting rich people toying with the lives of poor people's isn't out of pocket, actually.

I feel like I watched a detective show once (probably CSI or one of its spin offs) where rich people kidnapped poor people to hunt them down for sport at their big mansion in the middle of no where.

A lot of the pointlessly cruel laws proposed by the richest people in my country's government has made me recently believe that many rich do in fact simply enjoy torture. To be precise, I believe they enjoy showing that they can fully get away with things others can't, because of the money they have.

The rich being cruel to the poor for the lulz is not unheard of, and happens often throughout history.

Cecil is a net positive force on a macro level but he is in bed with a lot of dubious individuals to do that. I think Mark is looking a little too hard into the mirror and moralising to deflect from his own fears of his heritage while not understanding how terrifying it is when he’s angry at someone non-powered, also. It’s an interesting conflict!

Cecil is my fave character, although he may end up tied with Rex, so I might be biased.
