What is it that you think you'd be giving them by signing into an existing account, that they do not already have?

Sign in, download everything, delete account. To settle the paranoia you couod also change all your ither passwords but that seems a bit much.

^This is what I did. Downloaded all my entries, and deleted my account. Quick and easy. If you have a DW account or import your LJ entries here, especially if you use the same name for both, just make sure you use a different password for this account than your LJ.

OP

Well, y'all are giving me a kick in the ass to get back in one more time.

How would I go about downloading the whole thing? Is there a site or app for that?

(And as always, thank you so much for making my secret, secret-maker!)

Not sure about a tool for downloading them all at once, but LJ gives you a way to do it a month at a time:

https://www.livejournal.com/support/faq/8.html

If it's OK to not download but you just want the content hosted somewhere that's not LJ, you should use Dreamwidth's import tools (I haven't used these in a while; it's possible they might be broken):

https://www.dreamwidth.org/support/faqbrowse?faqid=86

You can also download from Dreamwidth (i.e. after importing) but it doesn't look like it's any more powerful than LJ -- still requires you to download a month at a time:

https://www.dreamwidth.org/support/faqbrowse?faqid=175

Because of that, I wonder if there IS someone out there who made a tool to download each month, just by automating the process of going through month by month. But I don't know anything in particular. Hope this helps, though.

And yes, agree with other people that there's nothing you're giving LJ/Russia/hackers by signing in (well, other than appearing active on the site again which IDK, maybe there's some spammer out there for whom that's helpful to know, but I doubt that's what you're worried about). You probably DO want to delete your account/data after you've backed it up, though, and change the password on any account that uses the password you used for your LJ if you haven't already (I hope you've already done this, though, because there was a security breach on LJ YEARS ago and LJ passwords are considered compromised and not to be reused for accounts that resemble your LJ one). No issues with logging in, though, and it's probably an improvement in terms of your cybersecurity for you to log in so that you can (eventually) delete that account and scrub it from the internet.

I am sorry. What? Putin himself is going to do exactly what?

(Anonymous) 2025-02-28 12:35 pm (UTC)(link)
What makes you think that you and your livejournal are important enough to attract the attention of Putin himself?

(Anonymous) 2025-02-28 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I love questions like these. It really suggests the privilege of the person who posted it.

There's a lot of innocent folks who get caught up in terrible orders, not because they are doing anything bad or worthy of attention, but just because whoever they are and/or whatever they are doing aligns with something that the destroyers hate or consider a threat.

To be fair, chances are extremely low Putin gives a fuck about some random LJ that hasn't been updated in years. But that doesn't prevent one of his cronies from hacking the account or using it for something (and yes, I'm aware if they wanted to do that, they would have done it already). It's never a bad thing to be vigilant around spaces controlled by countries with a corrupt leader.

you didn't actually answer the question, you just pointed a finger at 'relative privilege' and handwaved that "something" could be done.

tbh they are not wrong, but afaik all the *"insert social network here" user was jailed for a reblog/post* cases were about soc networks popular in Russia (Odnoklassniki, VK, Facebook, Telegram), not a single case about LJ, so eh.

ppl already replied and OP saw, but as another fandom russian in the wild - go for it and don't worry. they aquired control over LJ because it was an origin of russian political opposition (Navalny and others had blogs there and started as bloggers with millions subscribers, it's a loooong story), fandom never interested them. also, I bet LJ could go dead anytime now so it's good to save whatever you (and anyone else) can.
