[Cardcaptor Sakura]

(Anonymous) 2025-03-01 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Not that it would EVER matter to CLAMP, but Tomoyo and Sakura are also related to each other. (Their mothers were close cousins. And if Tomoyo's mom had had her way I'm guessing they would have been kissing cousins.)

(Anonymous) 2025-03-02 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't take this as me defending it, but isn't that more normalized in Japan? Or the view that cousins are biologically far apart enough to not be a big deal?

(Anonymous) 2025-03-02 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
da

It's more like, crushing between girls is considered almost an innocent rite of passage and a phase in Japanese culture. Something you eventually grow out of once you mature. (And yes before you ask, it's rooted in sexism because it's infantilising women and queer women in particular with regards to their agency. Homosexuality between men is more 'real' and therefore more taboo.)
Though this attitude is much more rare nowadays compared to say, 30 years ago. New generations understand homosexuality (and genetics) much better.

So if you see it from that 'innocent' lens, sure, kissing cousins? Nbd. But I wouldn't say it's normalised.

I know this is based more on the anime, But I think Tomoyo x Meiling would be a good ship.

(Anonymous) 2025-03-01 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Sakura is extraordinarily oblivious, so even if she was into girls I don't think she would understand a) what that meant or b) that Tomoyo was also into her.

+1

I never noticed until YEARS later that a classmate obviously had a huge crush on me and was trying to ask me out. Doesn't mean I'm not into that gender or not into dating now. Some kids really aren't aware of that stuff or interested.

(Anonymous) 2025-03-02 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe not Sakura herself, but I think Tomoyo would've picked up on it if Sakura liked girls and confessed to her because she knew there was a chance. But since Tomoyo can tell Sakura is straight, she's resigned herself to never having her love reciprocated.

(Anonymous) 2025-03-01 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Straightest? she had a MASSIVE crush on Kaho. Tomoyo's her friend and just not her type. (Her type being: magical beings.)

(Anonymous) 2025-03-02 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
She thought Kaho was beautiful and cool. That doesn't mean she had a crush. I think lots of people are beautiful/handsome/attractive and cool, but I'm not attracted to them, I'm aroace.

(Anonymous) 2025-03-01 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Didn't her best friend have a thing with a teacher or am I thinking about a different CLAMP series?

(Anonymous) 2025-03-01 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Not her best friend, but one of the 10-year olds is engaged to their teacher yes

(Anonymous) 2025-03-01 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
DA - but wait, a 10yo is engaged to an adult in canon?

(Anonymous) 2025-03-01 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
The teacher gives Rika, the 10yo, a ring and tells her that he hopes one day it will be a wedding ring.

This only happens in the manga. The anime didn't go so far as a teacher getting engaged to a child.

(Anonymous) 2025-03-01 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah there was only some implied girl-has-crush-on-teacher, which is... y'know, more normal as long as the teacher doesn't act on it. Like an adult is supposed to.

I don't remember the anime enough to know if there was any hinted reciprocation.

(Anonymous) 2025-03-01 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT. My vague recollection is that he never really reciprocated in the anime. He was just a nice teacher, so he'd smile when she'd smile at him but it was mostly just her with her silly crush. If there was anything more, I don't remember!

I do recall that the cardcaptors adaptation tried turning Rika's crush into fear of him and that was a Weird Take on it. The crush by itself was pretty wholesome and age appropriate, from her part. It was just his manga reciprocation that was creepy and weird.

(Anonymous) 2025-03-02 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
I think the weirdest the anime got was the teacher giving her a pin as a gift because he thought it looked like something she'd like (which turned out to be a card that possessed her, but he didn't know that). Nowadays that is definitely known as inappropriate for a teacher to do even if it's just meant in a friendly way, because it shows favoritism and could be taken the wrong way, but when the anime was made that wasn't really in the public consciousness, so it was probably meant show the teacher is a nice person who pays attention to his students' interests.

(Anonymous) 2025-03-01 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
See, I had originally written "in a relationship with a teacher" but then changed it to something more vague because I remembered that these girls are younger than the usual high school aged protagonists and I figured I remembered that detail wrong. But then you wrote "engaged" and I had this visceral reaction of "ahhh, CLAMP".

(Anonymous) 2025-03-01 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember thinking it was kinda funny that the girl’s barely mentioned in Clear Card and when she did show up (briefly, ‘cause she’s at a different school), the teacher wasn’t mentioned at all.

Ahhh, CLAMP, where in CCS, the kissing cousin stuff is arguably not even the worst eyebrow-raising part of the franchise (I love CCS, it's my favorite anime/manga, but they had that whole thing with Sakura's classmate engaged to her own damn teacher in the manga which was a whole lot of "Oh, dude, nooooooo, ewwwww.")

Any who, the only thing I'll add is that I disagree that Sakura is boring. I still maintain there is something very nice about a girl whose biggest superpower is her kindness and how that in turn, helps her in her quest and the friends she makes. I just think it's sweet. So, agree to disagree on that front. *shrugs*

(Anonymous) 2025-03-01 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I never watched all of CCS (and didn't watch much of the crossover with xxxHolic) but I never disliked Sakura. She seemed like a genuinely nice and caring person which is pretty rare in a lot of shows but especially anime/manga it seems.

(Anonymous) 2025-03-01 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I love Sakura too! I don't feel bored by her when I'm watching the show.

(Anonymous) 2025-03-02 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Sakura didn't feel like a generic blandly nice character to me and I liked her.
