I think you're on the money with this.

People make cater their online experience exactly how they want it then are surprised when the real world doesn't work the same way.

Yup. People have gotten this idea that the world is supposed to be tailored to them, and have a lot of trouble facing the reality that it, well, isn't. But I don't think this just applies IRL. It applies to online spaces, too, precisely because the internet is the realm of curation. Everything online is supposed to be for them, so when they come across something they don't like, it has the feeling of a pathogen escaping containment.

Of course, the reality is that we live in a world with many different people who all have different perspectives and experiences, and so much is entirely out of our control, and to get along, we all have to learn how to live with that. Not only are people aren't developing that skill, but the messaging they receive basically tells them that they shouldn't have to.
