Eh. I'm also a shoes off in the house person and can't imagine how dirty my floors would be if I weren't. But I guess it depends on how much walking you do, and where, and what you're likely to track back into the house. In wet weather, I'd be dragging in mud, leaves, pine needles into the house and I wouldn't want that ground into the carpet or on my sofa... which seems very reasonable.

I live in the city - there's no yard in front of my building. I'm going sidewalk-metro/bus-office-building-and-back. My shoes do not touch dirt 95% of days. All the dirt on my floors is originating inside the house - crumbs, the cat tracking tiny bits of litter around, regular dust, etc. I try to sweep pretty regularly but sometimes it just doesn't happen.

That said sometimes I have shoes on and sometimes off. Depends on whether my feet feel cold or sore or what.

I don't care what you do in your own house, but by going outside at all your shoes end up getting dirt and muck on them. Not mud no, but dust, gravel, and other crap? Yeah absolutely.

GRAVEL???

(Anonymous) 2025-03-04 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
Have you not heard of gravel, or...? Not everyone lives someplace with a paved driveway, or even fully paved roads. It's not uncommon for rural houses to have gravel driveways, and if you walk on it, you'll be picking up little bits of rock and dust on your shoes.

That's fine for you, then. I live in a rural area, and I have a dog so we're in and out of the house multiple times a day. Though honestly... I haven't been in many cities with a metro that don't have dirty streets, trash and questionable sticky substances on the subway and I don't want any of that on my floors, either. Perhaps your city is different.

And your city is perfectly clean? No one is spitting on the streets? No dogs pooping and their owners who never clean? No garbage sometimes just flowing with rain? No rats? No pigeons?

This. Ayrt is fooling themselves if they think they walk around a city and take public transportation and their shoes "don't touch dirt" most of the time. You might not be walking on actual earth, but cities are not pristine places.

"I walk in a city so my shoes don't touch dirt" might be one of the most insane sentences I've ever read.

(Anonymous) 2025-03-04 07:32 am (UTC)(link)
Right? I'd even argue that the dirt you pick up in a city is worse than a bit of soil and gravel.

Do you not wipe your feet off before walking inside? We have a mat outside and one inside, leaves and dirt etc aren't really an issue. But tbf in mud season or heavy winter the shoes do come off.

(Anonymous) 2025-03-04 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
I'm wondering this too. We've also got a mat outside (with bristles to scrape any mud/leaves/gunk off) and then a mat inside to wipe your shoes off if they're wet and I can't say I've ever seen leaves or dirt get tracked in between the two of them.

(Anonymous) 2025-03-04 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Sure, but it doesn't get everything. Especially if you're wearing shoes with deep treads.

In wet weather I take my shoes off at the door and then go put on other shoes. Same if I cut the grass or I go somewhere dirty. The rest of the time there’s no need. I’m in and out of my house constantly with my pets but I’m only going onto the deck 90% of the time. The rest of the time I’m either on the slab walkway or on the moss that we have in place of a lawn. It would be uncomfortable to do any of that outside walking in my slippers even though they have hard soles. Plus, it would suck to have to change footwear that often especially with two dogs waiting excitedly right there at the door waiting for me to take them out.
But also, I work from home and rarely leave the house so if I didn’t wear shoes in the house, my feet would be a mess. I walk over four miles a day in my daily routine and that’s just inside or on the deck. My feet NEED support. If I were just home a few hours between work and bedtime and most of my time was spent on the couch, then I’d just wear slippers.
