People always see the version of a show they want to see.

They watched it as kids and didn't get anything other than space lazer and punching. They never went back to re-watch, so when they watch the new stuff they think it's gone "woke."

Most of the people who say that kind of thing are comparing new "woke" ST to shows that first aired before they were born or when they were children. Now that the politics are paralleling events that they're present for and understand, they're freaking out because their heroes aren't on the same side as them and that means the writers are doing it wrong. What those people don't understand is that the political parallels in the 60s and 90s were just as obvious then as the ones written today are, and if they were the same age as they are now, but living back then, they just wouldn't have been fans of the show. Plenty of people weren't fans in the 90s because they decided the shows were too PC. I wasn't around in the 60s/70s, but I'm guessing there were a lot of people who didn't like the show for various racism/sexism/political-related reasons, or else just didn't get the message at all because the mainstream SF angle was new enough to serve as a distraction from the rest of it.

I mean, depending on the episode, there are arguments to be made about how well certain messages are delivered, but you could say that for every incarnation of Trek.

But, TL;DR, it's not that the overall message has changed. It's that the viewers with these complaints actually understand the message now and it pisses them off.

I'm a fan of Michael, but I get it. I actually struggled with the 8th season and the last season was a mixed bag. Not so much from a lack of Michael because I felt like his exit from the show worked well. But it just wasn't as funny or interesting. But to each their own, I know this shows brand of humor isn't for everyone.

Eh. If my best friend did the things Willow did, I’d cut them out of my life. They can certainly move on from it and be a better person but it’s also reasonable for those that knew them to not want anything to do with them again. For me as a viewer, about the only good thing about keeping Willow around was seeing how no one fully trusted her ever again. Because that’s real life.
