I remember some people who I think were just primed to hate anyone who wasn't Kate, when she was introduced.

There are things I hate about Ziva but they tend to be in line with the things I hate about NCIS as a whole rather than like... oh, how dare this female character be/do (x). Like, especially regarding 'being mean' to Tony, he deserved it?

Yeah she was absolutely not a perfect character but the things that were faults are generally faults the entire show has. It was one of those weird fandoms where I loved parts of the show and absolutely hated others. Like the characters and team were so fun, but the politics and general bigger storylines were not great.

I remember the same thing. Which is kinda funny to me because I never understood the love for Kate or her actress. She was fine. A fine character and a fine actress. Just nothing all that interesting or spectacular for me. Ziva is what got me hooked on the show.

But like you, my issues with Ziva are the same as everything else on the show up to the time that she left. I ended up having even worse issues as the show went on, even after I stopped watching. And I used to love Mark Harmon but that show made me hate him. I brushed off all the Jethro stuff as a product of his generation, blah blah but he turned out to be a real piece of shit IRL.

Yeah, he is unfortunately. He would bring his dogs to set and they weren’t socialized properly. There were multiple instances of them snapping at cast and crew, then one finally bit someone. I think a camerawoman? Or maybe she was a sound tech? Someone who had been with the production for many years if not from the beginning. She had to go to the hospital and before she was even stitched up she was fired and the studio dropped a mountain of legal paperwork on her that basically kept her from saying or doing anything about what happened. Pauley Perette (I think I spelled her name wrong) finally told the story years later since she had nothing to lose by that point. She also said some other smaller things that had eaten away at their relationship but that was breaking point and she herself almost got fired over it for attempting to stand up for the crew member. Well, crew members really because the dogs had been a problem even before and MH continued to bring them to set even after the biting incident and people were scared.
