Like, theres an episode where Abe Lincoln calls Uhura a negress, then apologises and she says something to the affect of "It doesn't matter what you call me, as long as you treat me well".

Can you FATHOM the mental gymnastics, or memory holing required for the - what used to be called PC language police in my day, but these days would be simply called - Woke to see that message and conclude that star trek only and completely aligns with their values?

But they do. Its what people do. VERY few people change their values to align with their heros, most often people recontextualize their heros to align with themselves. Ignore and forget what they cant twist. And heres the REALLY insidious part, they tell themselves that the mental gymnastics is a deeper understanding than what everyone else is capable of, its not self deception its a product of their higher level perception and media literacy.

It has to be, they like the show, so it HAS to morally align with them, thats what good shows DO! And this understanding makes them feel good and smart and right.

And I'm shitting on the lefties because thats the angle that seems most obvious to me, but I have no doubt O do the same stuff, I'm just - by necessity - blind to it.

But I'm sure I do it, so for the most part, I just try not to ascribe moral values to people based on what shows and movies they like.

Except Cuties. If you liked cuties you can get in the fucking chipper.
