I'm always a bit torn on declarations like this. On the one hand, yay for positive body image. On the other hand, it's seriously depressing that women's body image is so dependent on men's judgment.

(Anonymous) 2009-09-30 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
TBH it's no worse than men worrying women won't like them unless they have a six-pack of abs or a sexual organ of an "impressive" size.

As someone who had to deal with body image issues similar to the OP... I must say that the issue comes from worrying both men AND women will judge them or make fun of them for not having "perfect" breasts... which really is often the case.

I hope Hollywood actually starts using more "real" looking women soon... then again that is probably a pipedream.

[identity profile] skelody.livejournal.com 2009-09-30 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
More to the point, it's no better.

I've heard that UK television has less of a problem with the portrayal of women's bodies.

(Anonymous) 2009-10-01 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Then you've heard lies.

People are always going to want to appeal to the person they find attractive. This is not going to change as long as humanity exists. What needs to change is the narrow definition of attractive and worthy we have as a culture.

Somewhat, in that UK TV has either less or no ads depending on the channel (ads are restricted to, iirc, six minutes an hour instead of 15) so there's no drive to make viewers feel inadequate in order to sell advertising. In commercial media, advertising is content and content is advertising, etc.

I mean, it's still often a beauty pageant but I don't know that you'd get shows like Two Fat Ladies, Ab Fab or French & Saunders made in the USA. I don't know that Victoria Wood would have become famous in the USA. We've got our treasured older women, like Judi Dench and Zoe Wanamaker. There's that piece of elbow room on UK TV for women who aren't thin and/or beautiful.

When my husband first saw the ads for the UK version of The Office on Comedy Central a couple of weeks ago, he pointed to a female character and said that she was wearing an ugly dress, and that in a US show they'd never do that. I don't watch much TV and I don't follow fashion so I've no idea how accurate a statement that is, but it makes sense that fashion would follow the rest of the beauty industry wherever the advertising industry is involved.

The other big difference is that US TV seems to be built on movie conventions and UK TV seems to be built on stage conventions, and perfection in form and image definitely belongs more to the former.

methinks you are misusing "cry moar."

Re: cry moar

(Anonymous) 2009-09-30 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmm. I'm sensing some bitterness that the OP got closure someone else didn't.

Unless I am misreading... the OP seems glad to have that particular issue (if there is one) off their chest. *unintentional bad pun is bad*

LOL

You got it wrong anon. You can't be fat =P

[identity profile] stackcats.livejournal.com 2009-09-30 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Fuck what guys think, big breasts = a chore. My back aches and my bras cost a fortune but I can't ever go without one. Think yourself lucky.

OP

(Anonymous) 2009-09-30 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately I understand... apparently my sister inherited the body size of the women on our dad's end of the genepool (she's 17 and is a DD). My mother's side is much smaller in almost every aspect except height. Well, not so much i "understand" as "I can be empathetic". Bt my sis pretty much always says what you did "fuck what they think!" but it never really sunk in untl my guy friends (i'm a bit of a tomboy...) started talking about how "hot" they thought F.D. was.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2009-10-01 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Empathy or not, you can't know what it feels like to have breasts that big or bigger - I'm an H cup! - unless you've actually had them at some point.

I'm going with the "cry moar" person up above, mostly due to your calling yourself "less fortunate" for having small breasts. You don't know how privileged you are.

Re:

(Anonymous) 2009-10-01 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yay and the calvery of douchebags arrive with their holier than thou OMG-You-Don't-Know b.s.

If you feel your oversized breasts are such a bother get a fucking breast reduction or shut the fuck up. Honestly. I think you guys have a problem with people finding inspiration to accept their bodies as it is. Maybe you should be the ones to "cry moar" because, lets face it, if you have a poor body image or even a relative low opinion of your body whether you're bigger, smaller, wider, thinner than the "perfect" image you can and will consider yourself less fortunate bodily.

For the record, yes the OP CAN in fact be empathetic. Sympathetic no. show empathy yes. If you dont know the difference take the time to look it up in a dictionary.

guys still prefer the tiny perfect boobless hipster girls.
This.

Seriously my Ds have never helped me with anything and in my desire for tomboyishness have only ever hindered.

[identity profile] bazcat89.livejournal.com 2009-10-01 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
In my experience men seem to prefer tiny skinny women with equally tiny breasts than normal sized healthy women with breasts larger than a B-cup.

(Anonymous) 2009-10-01 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, not OP here, but normal for me is tiny, skinny, and less than a B-cup. Thanks.

Also, I think it depends on where you live and the men you come across. I hear way too many "oh, you look about twelve years old!" to buy into the idea that most men want tiny women. It's not going to be the same for everyone, and tbh, if your body size and shape is the make-or-break part of the deal for a guy, he's not worth it, anyway.

[identity profile] bazcat89.livejournal.com 2009-10-01 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
Meh. Ignore me. I'm just bitter over my latest being-ignored-by-a-guy-for-a-tiny-hipster-girl venture.

TRULY SHOCKING.

lirl i think my bitter has been showing in these comments

(Anonymous) 2009-10-01 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
My tits are smaller than Felecias (which makes me wonder, if people consider her small chested, what am I?), and I love them. I don't have to wear bras, it's great!

(Anonymous) 2009-10-01 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Really? What about society's nipplephobia? I'm practically flat, but I still have to wear bras (unless I'm wearing thick/multiple layers or something super baggy).
