I always feel a little weird when people complain about other people saying so-and-so "deserves" to be with such-and-such. To me it's just always seemed really obvious that the phrase is shorthand for deserving to be loved by someone who would love them back.

But at the same time that I'm thinking a lot of complainers are just looking for things to be pissed about...I can kind of also see their point.

I take that particular ship-issue on a case by case basis. My long standing (and mostly dead) fandom has a hard on for pairing for one particular female character that make no sense. The female character in question is a young mother with a lot of bad luck (evil baby daddy, cults, cheating boyfriend/best friend). People like to pair her with either the resident jack-of-all trades nerd, who lacks patience, has no interest in her, and has so far been attracted to only one other girl who was nothing like the young single mother; bold are assertive with outside interests, where the single mother mostly only cares about her kid. The other guy they pair her with likes bad-girl blondes, has a habit of running off, and hasn't been shown to like kids. But proponents of both pairings swear up and down that "she deserves a nice guy!" (neither are terribly nice) and that the guys would be "a great dad!" Doesn't help that the show is a soap, and thus everyone has had drama and thus "deserves" someone good to settle down with.

It completely skeeves me. Ship her with them because you like the dynamic or want to explore a different side of the character, not because you think that guy is hot and what the hell, she's earned a prize.

Re-reading, my main problem under all that tl;dr is mostly that it warps all three characters involved, all because the female character "deserves" a nice guy. The "earned a prize" stuff is extra wank on the justification cake. A good mate would be wonderful for everyone involved, but getting there that way annoys me.
