Those are pretty good "shipping commandments". I can't stand characters getting flamed just because they might pose a "threat" to someone's OTP, so they get called sluts, whores, losers, etc. That's just as dumb as the petty kill-art it spawns. Only a small percent of that is lulzy.

I always feel a little weird when people complain about other people saying so-and-so "deserves" to be with such-and-such. To me it's just always seemed really obvious that the phrase is shorthand for deserving to be loved by someone who would love them back.

But at the same time that I'm thinking a lot of complainers are just looking for things to be pissed about...I can kind of also see their point.

Bah. It's all just so confusing.

But I like treating the characters I like as if they were prizes. I also like to watch them complain and struggle and try to claw their way out of my pairings, while I laugh like a God at their plight. I'm apparently evil that way.

Those are wise and fair. I especially agree with number 3.
I think everyone has their own set of Shipping Commandments that they themselves abide by, and kinda sorta wish others would too.

Good commandments, I have to say. Although I can't really say that I've been tempted to break any of them, because I've always just had the one solid OTP in a fandom full of characters I liked anyway... and then in all other fandoms, I just put characters together for the lulz. *shrug*

Agreed! I wouldn't be surprised if I broke one, but these are guidelines I try to follow. It always weirds me out when people use "deserve" in the context of relationships. People can't help who they fall in love with; it has nothing to do with deserving someone. In a similar vein, I get a little frustrated when someone talks about worthiness. While I think both aspects are a part of relationships (e.g. you don't think you're good enough for your significant other), it's kind of odd to use them as justification for or against a ship.

On the other hand, the character must be amazing to make fans feel that way about their happiness. ...'course it makes me angry when fans resort to bashing. Bashing A doesn't make B any better.

I never stopped and thought about it long enough to make a list of commandements, but that's all pretty damn reasonable. Actually, it sounds more like common sense to me.

Kudos on not triggering a canon/gay/lesbian/IC vs OOC debate, though.

Not bad. But then again I don't really agree with people who ship two characters solely because of looks too. Especially if they bring up the whole deserving thing. Because that to me is hypocrisy. You are going to complain about characters being turned into objects or prizes, but by shipping characters because they look "OMG!HAWT!" that turns them into objects too.

But then again, I say ship whatever the hell you want. I ship what I like and I don't need to dump on the opposing ships or characters to enjoy it or explain why I like it.
