I want to know what the fuck application are you using that makes word processing something you can even DO on a mac without buying extra applications? Because TextEdit is shitly shitty shit. I use it because I'm a cheapass, but if I had to write a THESIS on it, I would kill myself. WTF?

OpenOffice is great especially when I can't afford MS Office for Mac and have to do Excel spreadsheets forever and ever and ever.

Writeroom is an excellent, no-frills word processing app that's great for pounding things out. There's a free 30-day trial and it's $25 after that, but you should check it out.

Bean is also a very good free word processor if you have Leopard or Tiger, especially as it has a live word count at the bottom of the window (which OpenOffice doesn't, and that's not for want of trying). OpenOffice can still do more, but Bean uses less memory and loads quicker.
