Hooray, correct use of "squick" in that you know it's your issue and deal with it rather than harassing people! I personally dislike any kind of mentor/mentee situation from teacher/student onwards, but posting in fandom secrets is absolutely the correct way to complain about it.

Yeah, that’s is a definite no for me too. I’m pretty flexible about background ships, but I can’t read any hint of this.

For me, something like that never extends to avoiding a writer’s other work, that’s interesting to hear.

I'm with you on being squicked by the pairing-- Giles is SO dad-coded (and does remind me of my dad as well!). Like, there's an age gap ship I LOVE that isn't any less, but the old guy isn't a father figure, mentor, or teacher, and that makes all the difference for me, I guess.

I understand this squick and I don't read this ship at all, but by the same token, Giles is really hot! I'm fairly sure a portion of the Buffy/Giles shipping is wish fulfillment from people who identify with Buffy, as the protag.

I identify with Buffy but want to shag Spike into the grave a second time. I do get it.

Hey, as long as you don't go running around yelling at shippers who they can or can't ship, you can be squicked by anything you want. Which is why this site is the perfect place to vent about ships that freak you out.

Personally, I don't mind Buffy/Giles pairing because they're not related. My red line is blood relatives/family. Do I shame incest shippers for shipping what they want? Hell no, FandomSecrets is the only place I would ever even mention it.

I'm selective with ships where the dynamic is teacher/student or mentor/learner. I've never seen the appeal for Buffy/Giles because I think they work so well as student and mentor.
