Characters being complex doesn't exclude them from being idiots. Even if they are intelligent.

I am another writer, of both serious and comedic stuff, and I'd be freaking honored if they referred to my characters as such.

This. I refer to two of my current favorite characters as idiots because they ARE idiots in some fashion. One of them is highly intelligent, but he has the emotional perception of a brick. The other one is book-dumb but incredibly astute when it comes to reading other people.

They're both complex but also stupid in different ways.
