People don't have to like something just because it's a term of endearment in some circles.

Also, I'll say that I don't typically see people use it when characters are showcasing flaws or making mistakes. It's more, "right there, they're smiling at each other, those idiots" and, "oh, look at this dork, he's so sad and conflicted in this scene."
