I kind of remember that as a wider issue in the later seasons… people occasionally acting super OOC, seemingly in order to put Buffy in a more isolated/vulnerable/angsty position.

I'm watching season 6 right now (literally finishing the double-meat palace episode rn) and yeah, this season in particular feels more like everyone is being forced by the script rather than acting like their characters. It's only through the strength of the actors that they were able to carry the show and not get cancelled mid-season.
