This secret reeks of Jew-hating bait.

It's cool to tell people to punch Nazis right up until someone actually punches an actual Nazi. Then, it's time to have a discussion about making excuses for violence.

…was there a better way to word this?

Or is it just wrong for someone Jewish to raise the idea that a filmmaker feels like they’re exploiting human tragedy (of Jews and many others) to justify a shoot-‘em-up?

I’m not saying it was wrong to make the movie. I’m not saying people are wrong to enjoy it. It’s probably good that both of those things happened. I’m sharing a reaction I have to it.

(And none of these people are “punching Nazis”. It’s a movie.)

Oh I see, everyone is supposed to assume someone is Jewish based on which movies they do and do not like.

OP - an apology

(Anonymous) 2025-03-06 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Shit, sorry, you’re right.

That was not a good comment I left. Too emotional and irrational.

To me, the whole secret was so completely rooted in being someone with familial tragedy around the Holocaust. And I didn’t want to be too explicit about it because that feels unnecessary and like some kind of oppression Olympics.

But I see that from the outside, none of that is apparent at all. And for all you know, I’m some Nazi-sympathizing dipshit trying to start something.

AYRT

Well, I could have been kinder with how I made my point, so I apologize, as well.

What the actual fuck?

I don’t know what you think you’re seeing here.

I shouldn’t have to trot out my Jewish bonafides to make this kind of statement. But I guess I can, if you need that. We can tally Holocaust deaths.

One of these movies feels fucking great. Like I get to live vicariously through their righteous revenge. And the other feels like someone is using a massive tragedy as an convenient way to set a movie in a place where the heroes get to be as vicious as they want. It feels like someone is using the pain of others as an excuse.

The filmmakers probably didn’t see it that way, maybe they thought they were talking the topic seriously, but that’s how it feels to me when I watch.

OP - again, an apology

(Anonymous) 2025-03-06 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I realize this wasn’t fair. You don’t know me, it’s understandable that you might assume I’m a Nazi-sympathizing fuck.

That’s not where I’m coming from, but I can’t expect people to guess that. Maybe I should have added some more personal details into the secret. I was trying to leave it open to more people who might relate.

Watching Nazis get their comeuppance in a fictional film is wonderful since it didn't really happen very much back in the 1930s and 40s. But the secret is worded ambiguously and casts doubt on Inglorious Basterds being the enjoyable film to watch. And that means watching Nazis get destroyed doesn't seem like fun.

You sound unaware that both of these scenes are about killing Nazis
