That's how I feel when I hear people complain about Bendystraws Comeinpacks in the Dr. Strange movies. Admittedly, I'd never heard him with his real accent prior to those movies, so I thought nothing of the American accent. But now that I KNOW... on repeat viewings, his delivery of some lines do sound a bit off. But nothing on the level of "man, he's so obviously faking this accent, and it's sooooo bad!"

Bendystraws Comeinpacks is the best silly misspelling of his name I think I've ever seen.

I think accents have gotten better, just generally, in recent years. There are some examples of obviously fake accents, and to compare someone who can't hold the accent 100% perfectly on every sound to those really shows how much improvement there's been.

Considering that most people have no clue what a particular accent *really* sounds like 'in the wild', as it were...I think criticisms of them are kinda silly. Sure, maybe so and so in this series didn't nail that Scouse accent, but the majority of watchers don't have a clue what a Scouse accent sounds like, so maybe don't get too worked up about it.

Counterpoint - Keanu Reeves.

You know, a lot of people will point to his Jonathan Harker accent as the worst Keanu accent, but I will argue that the entirely unnecessary Southern accent he came up with for Devil's Advocate was worse. First, because that was not a good southern accent. But second, and probably mostly, our man was playing a guy from fucking Gainesville, Florida. The likelihood that you'll ever even hear a noticeable southern accent in Gainesville is maybe 40%, and if you hear one, the person speaking is probably from Georgia. Like, least necessary bad accent ever.

He did a great Southern accent in The Gift, though!

Are you suggesting that more than 50% of accent complaints are just about him?

It's a professional hazard of being immortal.

You're probably mostly right. Brits and Australians have gotten pretty good at doing American accents, for example. And the U.S. has so many regional accents that even if someone doesn't sound quite right to me, they still could plausibly be speaking with some kind of unusual regional accent I haven't heard. It'd still register to my ears as, "Huh, that guy sounds funny".

Yeah, but I'm Australian and there's almost nobody whose not Australian or Kiwi who can do one. Kate Winslet and Dev Patel spring to mind as some of the few who did it well.

This thought has crossed my mind too.

The way people speak with their full chest about being able to decipher "real"/"fake" accents as if they're experts in linguistics lol

Okay, but some people are really good, and some people are really bad.

Like, I love my girl Jessica Ferguson, but her American accent in 'Silo' is pretty bad. It wound be one thing if other people in her silo, and especially the folks in the Down Deep, also had strange accents, but they don't, so it makes it obvious that she's struggling to get it right.

On the other hand, I was genuinely surprised when I found out that Naomi Watts isn't American, because her accent is fantastic.
