(Anonymous) 2025-03-08 09:22 am (UTC)(link)Part of the reason Chamberlain et al tried to talk down the threat of Hitler was he was frantically rearming and restructuring the British Military and British Industrial Base in order to fight them, but needed more time. Churchill loudmouthing in the tabloids every chance he got, just for his own ego's sake, made us enter a war that nobody really wanted to fight right then, and that Britain could not win. And then the whole bloody Japanese debacle, which is its own damn thing, too.
Plus he hated the NHS, tried to destroy the welfare state, wanted to set tanks on the Clydesider Protestors, and was the personal inspiration for Boris Johnson's offbrand generic imitations of him, which may have done even more damage long term.
And Churchill had the unmitigated gall to turn around and blame everyone else for "losing the empire", when it was his loudmouthed fragile ego that set the whole thing in motion. We'd still own bloody India if it weren't for him.
That is why I hate him.
And he didn't hang Arthur Percival for fucking cowardice and treason like he so richly deserved.
