For me at least all of the growth his character goes through in s2 is null and voided to make him into a trope of that era of TV show, basically the boundary crossing, abusive asshole. S1-2 Hopper is a flawed man but ultimately kind and his s2 arc is learning that he can't keep Eleven safe from what she can do(and is perhaps destined to). Well s3 throws that all out the window, Elven wants to date Mike and regardless of my dislike of him as a character Hopper starts being verbally aggressive towards the girl he considers his daughter for... liking a boy. A grown man gives an unnecessarily hostile shovel talk to a 14 year old, it was played for laughs, it was not funny.

Oh and he's possessive and jealous over Joyce being upset that her previous boyfriend yanno DIED. Like being snide and rude to the woman he supposedly 'has feelings for' because she's still grieving a man she liked a lot and is kind of traumatised over watching him get mulched.

It was a bizarre choice made for a character who was written a this outwardly gruff man who is a softie on the inside, and was gruff because of his own trauma(again s2 helping him with that a bit with letting Eleven save Hawkins).

DA

Whoever wrote the romance(?) between Joyce and Hopper in season 3 sucked at their job. Their arguing was not romantic/cute or built from anything. Joyce was worried about the kids and wondering what new horror was upon Hawkins, and Hopper was upset that Joyce wasn't interested in picking up cues that he's attracted to her. I really can't recall ever sensing sexual tension between them, especially after season 2.

Really fucking hated season 3. Didn't watch the show after that.
