The template for this has to be Sherlock Holmes. Conan Doyle was pretty much forced to bring him back.

Good call, that is the earliest example I know from serialized fiction.

I don’t know what the fan consensus is now or was then, but I wasn’t much impressed by his death. Moriarty isn’t that strong of a character and IIRC a ton of that story happens “offscreen”. I don’t know, it just didn’t make much of an impact on me. (I tried to imagine what it would have been like to read it naively at the time, but I couldn’t manage it.)
