I'm sure they didn't start the trend, but I remember Star Trek TNG did it with The Best of Both Worlds because they figured that if they got cancelled then they'd get a big write-in campaign from the legendarily fanatical Trekkie base and have at least one extra season to make good. Then because it did draw in the ratings and hold interest, they started doing it every season to greater or lesser levels of success, and then everyone else seemed to start doing the same thing.

In short, blame Star Trek.
