Tbh, when I say that I still get new music from fandom - I would say that a big segment of it comes from fanfics that quotes the song lyrics within the stories.

You do you OP! I have seen them in the wild, but I agree they are not as frequent as back in the day. But if you crave to write the songfic you should do it! I guarantee there are readers who miss them just as much as you miss writing them.
