Honestly, there aren't many great British actors under 30, either.

Anya Taylor-Joy is the only young actor these days who makes me sit up and take notice.

Meanwhile, roles keep getting specifically written for older actors like Cate Blanchett and Nicole Kidman. And it's great that older women are staying respected and in demand longer! But is it because there's not comparable younger talent?

I'm focusing on women actors here because I feel like male talent has been dried up even longer. I can't name anyone after Ewan MacGregor and Jake Gyllenhaal who have gotten my attention. Maybe Barry Keoghan.

But then it's doesn't really take a Maggie Smith or a Kyle MacLachlan to cast MCU movies, and the newer greats have wisely avoided the cape franchises.

Your comment is hilarious to me because Tom Holland is worldwide famous for being Spider-Man but he was British famous for being an amazing young actor long before then. If you watched things other than the latest blockbusters, perhaps you’d have a better idea of the young talent making movies these days.

I haven't seen any of his early work, and I don't watch blockbusters.

Who are these other great young talents you're talking about?

(Anonymous) 2025-03-15 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Freddie Highmore, Bella Ramsey, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Dafne Keene are just a few of them.

What DO you watch?

(Anonymous) 2025-03-15 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Just a handful of new movies here and there. Very rarely a TV series because of the time investment. The Queen's Gambit blew me away, and then I watched most of the rest of ATJ's movie roles. She's the only under-30 that intrigued me so much that I sought out her other work.

Okay, but in that case, it sounds like the reason you haven't noticed younger talent isn't because they aren't there, but because you aren't watching things.

Thinking more on it, I realized it's probably because the things I tend to watch aren't about young people. Because I'm not a young person.

Anyway, I feel like you're being weirdly combative about this? Considering the majority of us here are having a hard time making lists of talented actors under 30. Did I say something offensive to you?

(Anonymous) 2025-03-16 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not really sure why that comment came across as combative?

(Anonymous) 2025-03-16 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
da

Maybe combative's not the word, but it's kind of weird they can't seem to let go of the fact that not everybody watches the same movies they do. And there's the fact they're making assumptions about what ayrt does watch.

(Anonymous) 2025-03-16 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, anon said themselves that they don't watch a lot of things. It's not much of an assumption to think that might be why they aren't seeing new actors.

DA
I don't see them as combative.

Also I am just amused how most of people here prefer media about older people or rewatch older stuff. And complain about lack of young actors. Maybe, just maybe, we just do not know them?

AYRT
I highly recommend watching Adolescence! Personally I think Stephen Graham is amazing in anything but this was particularly brilliant. He came up with the premise after two different cases of teen boys killing teen girls and it explores a lot more than just the same old whodunnit you usually see.
But I mention it because the boy who plays the central character was phenomenal! It’s a limited series so no huge time investment and I think it’s just a fantastic watch for anyone who likes media that makes them think.

Damn, if I hadn’t been impressed by any actors since Ewan McGregor or Jake Gyllenhaal got into the game, I’d have given up on movies and telly.

For the most part, I have.

Bella Ramsey is an amazing actor, (watch the second season of Time) and whilst not working class isn’t Upper Class or even Upper Middle Class.

I wish we had more routes for working class kids to get into acting, but austerity has fucked everything up.
