I agree with this, but I also think that sometimes people are unfairly accused of that when they hate female characters because they're horribly written or written as bad people. I've seen people have valid reasons for disliking a female character but get accused of hating her for being the canon love interest of a dude they ship with another dude or just misogyny in general.

'written as bad people'

I'd buy this more if people hated more male characters for being written as bad people, but they don't.

This. Not going to jump the gun and say someone is sexist. But I wish more people in fandom would admit that female characters get unfair treatment in comparison to the guys instead of getting overly defensive about it.

Wow, that was bad wording. Sorry about that. I just meant that it's not always ship-related (why I felt the need to make the distinction, I don't know). I meant that sometimes there are valid reasons (and they're not always rational, sometimes someone will hate a character because they remind them of someone in their own life who treated them badly and it's not even about the character, for example) and sometimes it's just misogyny in general, not necessarily ship-related.

If someone hates a female character for doing 'bad' things but likes/loves male characters that have done things equally as bad or worse, I 100% agree that that's sexist.

I hate a female character whose worst crime is always picking fights with her so-called best friend. I love tons of male characters whose worst crime is mass murder. It's not about how bad the act is, it's about how close to home it hits and how it's treated in-universe. The "best friend" is never called out for being a shitty friend, she's treated like she's wonderful and the fans are supposed to think she's a good friend. The mass murderers are treated like, well, mass murderers.

*I love tons of female characters whose worst crime is mass murder too, though.

Oh, totally. How the characters are treated in canon makes a big difference. If male/female characters are treated differently in the same circumstances I tend to think it's probably sexism but honestly, there are all sorts of factors that go into why someone likes/dislikes a certain character.

The thing is every time I’ve seen fans talking about how badly written or awful a female character is when I’ve interacted with the canon myself they’ve been fine. There’s been a few across the years who definitely have just been poorly written, but most of the time her ‘horrible’ writing is her having her own opinions or, god forbid, not being all smiles and sunshine to the chosen fandom fave.
