I don’t mind it either. Sometimes it provides a necessary antagonist. Sometimes it’s just about venting your frustrations. In any case, I do think it’s kind of a dick move not to tag it or to pretend you’re presenting the canonical version of a character.

Lately I’ve been seeing a lot of character/fandom bashing in crossover fanfic stories. I get why people do that, you get to show why your favorites are so much better than those other lame examples. But as someone who reads crossovers because I like both fandoms involved, it gets really obnoxious going into them blind.

I really really like it when it's a character that a segment of the fandom is determined to ignore their canon character and try to woobify them and smooth away their misdeeds. I love reading bashing just to get that awful taste out of my brain.

I hate it, because if you don't like the character, just don't make them important in your fic. And it's rarely in character. I love a good "character makes dark choices for good reasons oh shit they're evil now" fic, but bashing is just pointless.

Yeah, I don't care if it is in character. Just want that drama. Give me Evil All Might and all the abusive parents.

What you're describing can be done well, and sometimes I dig it. Unfortunately, I usually see this kind of character bashing to break up a canon couple or popular fandom ship in order to make room for the writer's preferred ship. That would be annoying at the conceptual level anyway, but it's usually executed poorly to boot.

tbh i just want two things when it comes to character bashing:

a) tag it

b) actually have it have bashing in it

because there's a lot of fandom that thinks any crit of a character's actions is bashing and that's not what it is. bashing is going all out, Make Them EVIL, make them petty, make them loathesome. I love it, when it's actually bashing. It's weirdly cathartic to read.

(I also like thoughtful explorations and crit of a character's canon actions but, well, I don't consider that bashing.)

I'm all for whump, but I don't really trust authors to write something worth reading if they gotta make characters ooc to do it.

Character bashing, even of a character I hate, is an instant backbutton for me. It is usually wildly OOC and the bashing usually takes over to the point it is more about that than the story.
