When I was a kid, I always wondered why we never saw our mother's father - we would get a Christmas card from him every year, so we knew he was alive. Turns out that he dumped his wife (my grandmother) on their youngest child's 18th birthday so he wouldn't have to pay any child support or alimony, and left her in poverty while expecting his adult kids to fall in line with him and just abandon her. Joke's on him, my mother never spoke to him again and her two younger brothers talked to him just long enough for him to support them through university (while actually giving that money to their mother) then never spoke to him again either.
