Hmmm....

I never had FB so I guess I've never had to deal with that. I might say "hi" to old classmates and "catch up" for five minutes but would probably leave it at that. I don't have those attachments to school or childhood friendships either.

I never had childhood friends, either. And yeah, that shit hurt for a long time so I’m sorry, OP. But tbh I haven’t thought about it in a very long time and when I do I’m a little sad about it but the hurt has long since faded. I have friends now and a healthy relationship with the world and life in general. I think that’s what I was really missing as a kid and the friends are just the visible proof of having that.

It's fine to not be friends with someone for any reason. It's also fine to not want to forgive or forget things that happened in the past, if it were to come up somehow.

On the other that it's kinda weird to assume those people are the same as they were 10-20 years ago and would be so dismissive about how everyone acted as kids, or to assume they'd want to be friends with you still. If it's been that long, they're different people and total strangers to you now. Time and effort spent worrying about people you don't know any more is wasted imo

Yeah, this hit me hard. I struggle with making friends as an adult because I had no childhood friends growing up, it sucks. I just have my family that I'm emotionally distanced from for reasons I can't talk about outside of therapy. I just accept it and don't watch movies like this, this stuff is out of my age group anyway.

"Turning Red" and "Everything Everywhere All At Once" made me realize, as an Asian with inmmigrant Asian parents, I have... specific expectations when it comes to generational trauma media starring Asian first gens with their immigrant Asian parents.

And those two movies... well, I have opinions, but I realize this is a me problem.

I'm sorry Secret OP. It's always painful to recall how lonely you were when you were a kid.

My experiences weren't like yours, per say. I always had at least one friend who I felt comfortable being myself around growing up.
However, I'm almost 40 and looking back, I was bullied by popular girls who mocked me for being "weird" but I disassociated a lot so it didn't register to me until literally one or two years ago.
It really hurt my feelings and I understand now that as a kid/teen I ignored or felt confused with the treatment I got as a way to protect myself.
Facing the humiliation and loneliness has been very painful and I had to learn to cry and be actually angry at the ostracism and mockery I received.

Also, I had to learn to let go of friendships that didn't serve me anymore. And that is not fun at all.
Some friendships that helped me feel seen and supported as a teen eventually transformed into one sided or complicated relationships.
And ho-boy, was it not fun to have friendship breakups because a lot of my friends assimilated to more popular friend groups or they got a boyfriend/girlfriend and stopped hanging out with me with no thought. I just had to figure it out when I chased after them and they ignored me.

In a lot of ways, friendships in youth can be overrated or overly romanticized.

You owe no one any pleasantries, and a lonely existence can transform into a independent experience and you get to know and accept yourself better than your peers.

OP this reeks of hypocrisy. Did you support your friends and their hobbies? Were you a good friend? Why should your old classmates should guilty and 'understand your anger'? They might be angry AT you for thinking so badly of them. Unless they were bullies but those not friends anyway. It's like you are looking at your resources for potential friends and proclaiming your classmates to be not good enough. Yeah, fiction friends are so much better.
All in all I get major Gluten anon vibes.

They're her most popular books for a reason, and I still love them, too.

As for feminist... yeah, I don't expect that. The first book was written in 1908, there's very little chance it's going to resemble anything like modern feminism. It's true, despite her higher education and aspirations for her writing, Anne ends up in a very traditional wife and mother role. I still love her character because of her imagination, and how it got her into trouble as a kid because that was pretty much me, too.

That said, I also love the Story Girl books and The Blue Castle, but Anne is a standout character in Montgomery's work.

I played this game where one of the characters has this whole arc about overcoming her trauma, and then this other character shoots and kills her, and I was frustrated because her recovery didn’t affect anything. All those scenes could just have been skipped over.

That would be interesting and I'd love to read takes like that! But yeah, likely too challenging for the average writer to do well. Representation in fandom can be kind of... performative and very feelgood. People want that quick payoff and praise, and making fanart where a white character is suddenly a POC is a hell of a lot easier than the approach you describe.

I miss having a large, well-stocked library near me for in-person browsing. Online isn't quite the same, it's the experience and the leisurely reading pages that I miss. That said, the older I get, the more I struggle to find books that I connect to as a reader. Lots of them fall into this "great concept, meh execution" category and I end up being disappointed a lot at what initially sounded like a really promising book.
