Nah, a lot of people notice. Especially because it's often not at all low-key, but unapologetically open homophobia. From the companies themselves to the fans, it's usually not subtle at all. They just always try to justify it in the most pathetic ways (often with an unhealthy dose of victim blaming like "these games/characters are made for us het women, how DARE you be misgynistic and try to take this from us!".

SA
A lot of people just don't feel comfortable criticising it because the way some of those yumeshippers get downright unhinged in their attempts at justifying themselves is only rivaled by K-Pop stans when someone doesn't worship their preferred idols.

Another secret had comments claiming different VN developers have more or less homophobic fangirls. Not sure why that would be.

Depends, sometimes the developers themselves are openly homophobic or encourage/don't discourage openly homophobic behaviour in their fans in certain ways. Other developers also have same sex games in their lineup so the chances that their fans are in general less homophobic are higher. Also depends on where the developers and their main fandoms are based.

I've seen those types of creepily possessive fangirls all the time, especially during the 2000s and 2010s. They would claim an attractive fictional male as their bf/hubby and act extremely homophobic to any queer shippers of the character for "ruining" their "bf". They would often harass m/m shippers. The more clingy/possessive they were the more homophobic they were .

After all if [insert fictional male] is gay, then they can't be with them( though not like they can be with them either way due to being fictional)

Those fangirls were annoying AF

I'm a WLW yume that self ships with a female character, and... Yeah. From someone who was inside the community, I def noticed it and it makes me uncomfortable and not feel welcome. A lot of them pull the sexism card if you try to point out the homophobia,or they borderline act like antishippers over what other people do in canon/canon fanwork.

Honestly I've noticed the opposite of this in my fandoms. People will accuse yumejoshis of being homophobic for headcanoning their f/os as straight or any other sexuality than their canon one (if applicable). ESPECIALLY if the selfshipper is male and their f/o is female.

I think the big difference is the type of canon for this: What you describe happens more in general big cast fandoms where shipping is common between characters AND with self-ships. Whereas fandoms for romance centered VNs, otome games or any type of player POV husbando collection games tend to have more entitled homophobic yumejoshis.

(And then there are the big messes like RPGs where people get really invested in their chosen LIs/those characters' sexualities and in those fandoms, you get a weird mix of both.)

It's especially bad for joseimuke games that AREN'T otome, because those are almost always written to have purposeful subtext between the male characters since the creators know their audience.

Like, the one I'm into has VERY obvious subtext between certain pairs of characters. It's put there on purpose to attract the women who like to ship the guys together. You can choose to not read it as being romantic if you want but you can't deny that it exists.
