Re: I can't believe I thought that

Saaaame. It never occurred to me that people would lie (and other people would just publish it) or that people would be nuts (and other people would just publish it). If I had actually thought it out, I would have assumed there was some kind of grading like with school essays that you had to pass to be published in non-fiction.

Along the same vein I was pissed as fuck when I learned there was absolutely no archeological evidence for the bible. Why make me study this damn thing if it's not fact???

oh my god are you me?? I went through 10 years of being a hardcore bible thumper before I found out that there wasn't any record of half the shit in the bible (including Jesus) and the rest was cribbed from older civilizations who didn't have surviving writings to challenge the claim. at least until certain Sumerian and Assyrian tablets were finally correctly translated sometime in the last 20 years.

I'm fascinated by how much human history we have genuinely lost because everything they built was so non-durable and biodegradable that there's no finding anything. they only exist in linguistic and mythological/religious references in stories that did eventually get written down. That's amazing! But it still doesn't mean there is a god.

I was never very hardcore, but just assumed it was all factual because everyone else around me said it was. The sky is blue, the earth is round, and jesus was a historical figure and there are chariots in the Sea of Reeds where god drowned the Egyptians. Never questioned it. Then comes college and ohhhh y'all were LYING THROUGH YOUR LIAR'S TEETH. But I did learn a lot of cool stuff about Babylon and the Etruscans and the Minoans having indoor plumbing and heated floors and I still wanna know what the fuck was up with the Sea People but we'll never know and it makes me sad when I think about it for too long.

But yeah, immediately gave up the god shit cause there was nothing in favor of it but social pressure.
