Having an actual supernatural explanation works once just as a twist on the formula. The problem happens when the one off success gets copied ad nauseum because it was a success, and thus not only loses the surprise value that made it the success but also the twist now becomes the new formula.

It is the bane of any long running franchise, the subversion that ultimately becomes the new cliche.
