I agree with this secret about the type of genderbend stuff it looks like it's talking about. But I enjoy when people make fanart of a character with a different presentation, like yeah sometimes it's just "generic big titty anime girl doing a low effort cosplay", but sometimes it's good actually! Also I think "character has always been a different gender" fanfic can be interesting. Magical sex change stuff doesn't interest me at all though. Maybe if it was well written and got into the dysphoria of it?

4) Used because the writer doesn't like yucky slash ships.

(Anonymous) 2025-04-01 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
hard agree. it's all about weird gender tropes and not about the character, and that's boring. show me a take that keeps all the nuances of the character (and their outfits, yes, I'm sick of bikinis and miniskirts).

I mean, yeah, a lot of genderbends are just low effort dross. And a lot more are just stereotyping. But there's no shortage of good and thoughtful ones out there. Including published tie-in fic (Star Trek TOS and X-Men that I've read.)

why are glasses specifically associated with maleness??

I think this might be bimbo art? Glasses are supposed to be “smart,” so bimbofied characters lose them.

(Anonymous) 2025-04-02 10:50 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's maleness, I think it's just the whole "sexy makeover includes removing the glasses" thing, like in She's All That.

I think that trope was invented to sell contact lenses

(Anonymous) 2025-04-02 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
That's valid. I imagine people are writing what turns them on. That's valid, too, even if it's problematic or badly written.

I genderbend to gay it up even further lol The characters don't change much in my writings

If that’s the artist I think it is, she’s pretty obviously a trans woman.

(Anonymous) 2025-04-02 07:18 am (UTC)(link)
Explains the gross fetish then!

I think GBs can be fun, I used to love it as a kid because I rarely found girl characters that had the same attitudes and tropes as guy characters I liked. Nowadays I mostly like it when there's a genuine attempt of charcter design study. There is definely an annoying amount that are sexist and trown out the personality for sexy, sucks.

Ahh, good old spirit of tumblr. I mean, the author either:
A) …was actively looking for something disliked and… found it (outrage!). Well, I didn’t like Wotch either — and not watching it was no trouble whatsoever for years. Or
B) …was rummaging fanfics and ran into it. Was the rest of fiction in the same place also «for smut/fetish purposes» or not? If not, the very presence of untagged smut in non-smut section would be a solid cause for complaints (maybe with “and it’s FOO again!” on top, why not). Instead there’s only “I don’t like FOO, and it smells of thoughtcrime and also smut”. If it was in a smut zone, well… having fits of moral indignation while looking for smut looks quite ridiculous — regardless of merits such complaints may or may not have on their own. And that’s how Tumblr earned its place as an addition to the classic «Hell, or Hadleyburg (try and make it the former!)».

hahah I came into the comments to say "only for smut/fetish purposes" so what?? oh shit, the smutty fetish fics I read are specifically written to be so?? nooo, call the cops, I'm getting off to Bad Media nooooo

OP of the secret here. I just am not a fan of smut/fetish stuff as a whole.
That said it's okay if you like it, just don't try to force it on me.

OP of the secret here. I just really dislike Rule 63/GBs . I don't think it's bad for people to write them , but it's not for me. They just make me feel really uncomfortable. I also dislike smut/fetish stuff in general (it generally makes me feel uncomfortable).

If you like rule 63/GB/Smut , do you do you, I don't want to have it banned, but it's just not for me and it's not for moral reasons.

I read The Witch because a friend recommended it to me. I stumbled upon Ian C Samson's older stuff while on tvtropes. I wasn't actively looking for smut (not a fan of smut/fetish stuff).

How dare people use fandom for pleasure and/or wish fulfilment instead of GREAT JUSTICE!!!

(Anonymous) 2025-04-02 02:36 pm (UTC)(link)
It's okay to dislike a type of fiction

(Anonymous) 2025-04-02 12:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Sexy transformation kink is definitely not my kink, but why is it bad if the gender transformation story is sexual? People use fanfiction to explore their sexuality all their time, including, "Would it be sexy if this guy got turned into a girl? Let me write about it and see." Using fiction to explore sexuality is actually such a big part of fanfiction (actually, for amateur, self-published fiction as a more general category) that I would be extremely loath to admit that reason as a reason for disliking a particular kink in fiction.

"I dislike this kink so I dislike fiction featuring this kink" makes sense to me, or "I dislike this ostensibly non-sexual (but actually very commonly sexual) element because I dislike kink/sexual elements in fiction in general" also makes sense to me, but "I dislike fiction featuring this ostensibly non-sexual (but actually very commonly sexual) element because it's usually sexual for people" is a very strange reason for disliking something to me.
