Re: What is an online trend/meme/... you don't get?

Not waving back to a kid is like not even on the list of terrible things you can do to a kid and I find it so weird that complete strangers are expected to perform like dancing monkeys to any kid who happens to be near them and if they don't they're some monster that's 5 secs away from punting them into traffic apparently.

The most dangerous people for kids are their parents(or teachers/adults in positions of authority over kids) sadly but it's so much easier to point fingers at random people venting online than doing anything about those actually abusing them.

Yes. That's exactly what I was saying. Or maybe I was saying that when anyone says hi to you, it's considered polite to say "hi" back.

Random adults aren’t entitled to getting a response from strangers so why are kids meant to be an exception? At worst not responding to someone is a bit rude but that’s it. Fucks knows I can’t remember people not saying hi back if I say it first.

Did you even read what OP wrote? They literally said it's ok not to wave back to a kid and it isn't the act of not waving that's the problem, it's the gloating some people do about it. If the gloating were done about performing any other small polite interaction - for instance, "OMG you guys I rang up the groceries of a trans woman and called her 'ma'am', I feel like such a good ally!" - it would be called "being performative" and considered a bad thing. Nobody expects anyone to wave at kids. Just don't do it and don't brag about not doing it, and I promise the mean mean non-kid-haters will not come to get you.

OP - I think they're just being a troll.
