I've experienced this with more than one fandom, and I think a big part of it is just that the internet in general is a miserable place to be.

A person's writings or video recordings can be seen and because it's easier to get engagement via rage/anger, the internet encourages people to lean onto the worst aspects of fandom. Gatekeeping, nitpicking, tribalism, bad faith "discussions". It's exhausting.
