(Anonymous) 2025-04-12 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)That's just being so goddamn exhausted of having to explain the same thing over and over to people who won't listen because they're happy living in their own bubble that no one else's reality can pierce. Unfortunately, a consequence of that means you might prejudge others as being incapable of listening or seeing what you might consider obvious.
Imagine you're in an abusive relationship.
Every day, you're treated like shit by your partner. But everyone else *loves* your partner, because he treats *them* like kings and queens, or at least he seems nice enough. They can't understand why you're so unhappy in your relationship, and think there must be something wrong with you. Meanwhile, behind closed doors, you're insulted and made to feel like you're never enough, maybe you're even physically abused. You try to tell someone about the abuse, but they know your partner, and there's noooo way he's treating you like that! After all, he helped so-and-so in their time of need, so he's a stand up guy! You try to show evidence of the abuse, but they just ask you what your part in the abuse was, or brush it off as "all relationships have problems."
Now imagine that happening over and over. You think you'd be tired of explaining it to someone else after a while?
Now imagine it's happening on a national level. You don't have one abuser, but potentially hundreds of thousands, and you pray you don't run into one today (especially one who's in a bad mood). And you certainly don't have the breath to waste on people who can't be bothered to step outside of their own bubble. They've shown they can't be relied on to even believe you, so now you're using all your energy looking out for yourself and others like you.
And for the record, nobody says "abolish the police." They say "defund the police." Because local police often have equipment that might be more appropriate for, say, the army, and tend to be dangerous if you find yourself on the wrong side (even if you did nothing wrong). Personally, I wouldn't "defund" the police as much as I would reallocate those funds toward deescalation training and weeding out powerhungry assholes. We don't need over-the-top weaponry or rewards for shitstains who shoot unarmed people in the back. I'd also take some of the stuff cops are expected to deal with and give them other special training (for example, a disturbance involving a person with behavioral health issues, which may not be understood/tolerated by police), or just give the task to someone else altogether.
Oh, and I should note: not all police, but definitely too damn many of them. Good cops often exist in the short term, because they are either pushed out for trying to hold the bad cops accountable, or they eventually give up and get absorbed in a system that rewards bad cop behavior, which turns them into bad cops as well (due to their enabling of bad cop behavior).
