I do like it when I can either figure out the reasons for or get an explanation of changes made for the adaptation, as long as the reason isn't the director/screenwriter/actor didn't like the thing in the original (though sometimes I even understand that). I kind of wish there was always an accompanying commentary or something that came with the adaptation. Sometimes there's an in-depth interview around the time of the release or a commentary on the original DVD release, but sometimes they don't do anything like that until some special edition or anniversary release.

As for character perception, it can vary wildly among members of the audience, so much so that I have sometimes wondered if I watched the same media as someone else.

I honestly quite enjoyed "Why Don't We Just Kill the Kid in the Omelas Hole?" and thought that its conversational stream-of-conciousness tone really added to the thematic conclusion that Omelas itself was the kid in the Omelas Hole for the rest of society. However, I get you; I wouldn't say it felt "Hugo-worthy," whatever that means, and I'm not surprised that it seems to have had a pretty mixed reception among readers.

Is this secret saying that fantasies and/or fanfiction featuring rape/vore/snuff/etc of fictional characters seem to commonly feature “proud, independent egoists” as victims?
