I've seen the movie and... yeah, that's what she says. But it seems pretty clear that she has a deep love for the game when you look at Dottie's actions that it seems to me that she's in a tiny bit of denial. Her daughter says as much in the beginning of the movie.

I always felt like her hesitance was because she knew she was better than Kit and it meant more to Kit than it did to her. Which put her in a tough position from the beginning. IDK, for me, the sibling love and rivalry is the heart of the movie and has more to do with her decisions than wanting to start a family.

DA - I definitely think she knew she was better but that it meant more to Kit and she didn't want to do yet another thing that would put Kit in the shadows, but then Kit wouldn't have been able to go if not for Dottie. She was definitely in a tough spot.

I think that's a part of it, too. Dottie had the farm, her husband, and I'm guessing other things in life that she found fulfilling. Kit didn't, and her desire to belong to something and excel at something might've (at least initially outstripped her talent and Dottie saw that. I think she understood that Kit had been in her shadow, and that baseball was her chance at having something of her own. Though she did say it was because of her husband being home and starting a family, etc. which would've been a very traditional and socially acceptable reason to leave the team.
