As I recall it, Dottie didn't want to be part of it from the beginning. She only got into it for Kit's sake.

As the youngest sister, I agree. Even if Dottie didn't mind giving it up, Kit definitely should have apologized for all the shit she put Dottie through.

This is definitely what I always assumed and I'm a little shocked people would think otherwise. It seemed really obvious! I love/hate the ending. I agree with all of your points, but it was also just done so well that I ended up enjoying it to a degree.

I do think Dottie was a little more complicated. I think she had an equal love for her role as a wife and mother and family woman as she did for the game, but I think Dottie in her heart is ruled by logic and knew that baseball wouldn't really be a viable career or get her where she wanted. Plus where her love was equal for all things, Kit's obviously wasn't and this was something she could give her without sacrificing all that much of her own.

It's one of those things where you are sad to give something up but that sad doesn't mean it was the wrong choice.

Idk I have a lot of feelings about this movie lol. It was formative for me growing up and I love it to this day.

I just love how complicated both characters and their relationship is. I feel like it's hard to find such fleshed out characters, especially women, in movies. They're flawed and definitely frustrating, but so real.

I never thought Dottie threw the game. I don't think she's so egotistical that she would think the only way Kit and her entire team could win is if she let them, or so selfish that she would try to make that decision for everyone.

I think baseball did mean more to Dottie than she was probably willing to admit to. I'm not sure if she threw the game, though that would totally track. It's also possible that she maybe unintentionally didn't give it her all because she knew exactly what it would mean for Kit. But baseball wasn't Dottie's only love and it wasn't the only thing in her life that made her happy, like it seemed to be with Kit. I also think that baseball (and maybe Jimmy a little) represented something different, a temptation of sorts, to a different sort of life, but that Dottie didn't see herself as the kind of woman that would take that road to its inevitable end. I think she made the choice because she thought it was best for her sister, best for her marriage, and best for the kind of person she wanted to be.

But, yes, Kit was kind of awful to Dottie, several different ways. And, yes, Kit absolutely should have apologized to Dottie for all of them. I would like to think she did in the forty-odd years since then.

And, damn, I guess I had a lot of feelings about this.

I hope you know the real baseball player Dottie Kamenshek in which Hinson was based on, played for 10 seasons in the League, and is in the Women´s Baseball Hall of Fame. She also couched children as far as 1994, as far as I know.

So yeah, the movie Dottie shouldn't have given up her love for the game, and Kit should've gotten over herself (I zigzag between Dottie throwing the game, or the Bells's winning it fairly depending on the mood)

I have to admit that even as kid, I never understood why Kit threw such a fit. I mean, it's a standard part of the game: when you feel that Player A is too exhausted to carry on, you send in Player B to substitute. Why a baseball player would be so completely unfamiliar with this idea seems harm to fathom.

It's really obvious that Dottie likes baseball but it's not what she wanted as a career. Everyone else is projecting either their own bias against the woman choosing family over career trope (which I don't think applies here because she's only one woman out of a whole team, most of whom stayed players) or the liberties it took with history. You wish she'd liked it more than she did, but that's not what was conveyed by the writing.

I think Dottie was very much a woman of her time. In that she valued her marriage and role as a wife as her number one priority. She enjoyed her time as an athlete, but her priorities weren't there.

I think she likely saw the sort of passion in Kit lacking in herself. I think the film was smart to keep a desire for a career ambiguous so that you can question whether or not Dottie had any regrets.
From my perspective, she didn't, and she was grateful to have had the experience that she did with her short stint as a pro ball player.

As a younger sister, I always felt the portrayal of the self sacrificing and suffering in silence eldest daughter/sister to be not at all like my relationship with my elder siblings.
I know there are a lot of eldest daughters/sisters out there who performed that role well, but that wasn't my experience.
I appreciate the portrayal, but sometimes it hurts a lot to know that the protective older sibling cliche doesn't apply to me and my siblings.

I remember this military game called Six Days in Fallujah that got shelved because before it came out, pro-war people thought it would disrespect the military. When it came back years later, anti-war people complained about it because they thought it wouldn’t disrespect the military enough. It’s in early access now, and reviews are all over the map, but it seems to be doing okay at its narrative goals.

Kickin' it off early.

Starting to realize Mum can't ever be "at fault" for anything. When I told her I was having trouble opening up to her because I felt it would stress her out more, she literally said "you're the one who chose to stop talking, not me" - yeah, and she's the one making her stress obvious enough to warrant it, not me.

For such a people pleaser, you'd think 'sorry' would be an easier concept.
